WIND POWER
|
The human race has been using wind as a source of energy for thousands of years.
The Chinese were using wind power to pump water approximately four thousand years ago and
sailing ships were invented before that. During the middle ages wind power was used
to grind or mill corn which is where the term windmill comes from.

As the sun heats the earth some parts of the atmosphere become warmer than others.
The warm air rises and creates regions of low pressure which suck in air from elsewhere.
We perceive this as the wind blowing and can harness this using a wind turbine which is basically
a propeller on top of a tall tower.
If we build a group of these turbines together it is called a wind farm.
The more turbines we build and the larger the propellers the more power we can generate.

|
Wind farms need to be built in locations with strong, steady winds and the best places are in coastal areas,
on open plains or on top of hills.
Some are off shore.
An average wind apeed of approximately 25 Km/hr is needed to make a wind farm project worthwhile.

The propellers need to be as large as possible and they can usually be adjusted to cope with varying wind speeds
and directions. Some design use vertical turbines which don't need to face the wind.
The towers should be as tall as possible because the wind is strongest up high. The land below can still be used
for farming but many people regard wind turbines as an eyesore although some have become tourist attractions.
A wind farm consisting of five turbines (each one 80 m high with propeller blades 30 m diameter)
would produce approximately 1000 KW which would provide power for approximately four hundred homes.

Wind power is free, it needs no fuel and produces no waste or green house gases.
It is particularly suited for generating power in remote areas.
Wind power can be unreliable because nobody can predict when the wind will blow if at all.
It can be expensive - the land most suitable for wind farms is often near the coast where land prices are higher.
Wind turbines can kill birds and affect TV reception.
It can cause noise pollution although modern wind farms are quieter than coal fired power stations.
